Laying Out your Raised Bed Garden

September 11th, 2007

Laying out a raised bed garden requires following several steps. First you will need to create an outline of the perimeter with string and stakes. If you want to add curves to your beds then use rope or garden hoses to mark the curved perimeter. More than likely you will have a square garden bed or else a rectangle one so you can easily plant your vegetables in tidy rows. If you are planting ornamental plants then you may like the curved appearance. Once you have the perimeter laid out you will need to work in the area removing any vegetation that currently exists. Digging out roots of woody plants is important to keep them from growing back. An herbicide will kill any perennial weeds and keep them from growing back as well. You will need to till the soil once all weeds and vegetation are gone. Raised gardens also need edging. Some options include metal, bricks, cinder blocks, stone, and landscape timbers. Once the raised vegetable gardens have been edged you will need to install an irrigation system. At this point you are ready to add the soil and start planting your vegetables or perennial plants. It might take some time and effort but it is really worth it in the long run.
